Oh, it has been a busy season at The Vintage Hat Shop. Many new/vintage hats are cleaned, embellished, photographed and ready for "the shop".

Vintage 1940s hats-- tilt boaters

Many typical 1940s hats are shaped like a mini-boater. Note the narrow brim.  These classic styles have recently been sold in The Vintage Hat Shop.

We've looked at 1940s backbands, now let's see what the front of those 1940s tilt hats look like.
These examples are what I like to call "poof" hats. So Betty Grable!

1940s Sister Hats, a Gage and a New York Creation!

Every once in awhile some hats will come to The Vintage Hat Shop and you just know there is a story behind their eye catching appearance. Both of these 1940s black felt hats were acquired from the same person. Don't they just tell you something about the kind of gal that would own 1940s hats?  The black "loopy" hat is a Gage and the tilt is a New York Creation. These weren't her mother's hats, she had an elegantly dramatic look all her own! Sophisticated and alluring-- you bet!

I would say this young woman loved 1940s hats and  was very classy and stylish, wouldn't you? Oh, how I wish I'd known her!

Glen Miller Orchestra, The Best of the 1940s.

We recently had the chance to hear the 1940s style Glen Miller Orchestra down at Waterfront Park.

The Big Band sound was outstanding and so vintage retro!

My  favorite songs included--

It was such a cool evening that I was wearing my Smart Wool socks and my fleece jacket. But in my heart of hearts this is how I imagine a gal from the 1940s must have felt.

When I got back to the hat shop I had to make sure that many hats from the 1940s were listed.

Hedda Hopper- Hat Lover Extraordinaire!

Noted columnist Hedda Hopper was certainly a hat lover in her day. Take a look at the variety of hat styles from the 1940s and 1950s  that were her fashion. Yes, hats extraordinaire!!

Vintage 1940s Hats at the Tea Party

Now, doesn't this look like a fun party from the 1940s? I love that each hat is a unique style.
But I wonder what is going on with the gal on the far right!  It looks like she forgot both her hat and her gloves.

1940s tilt hat, Texaco, cleanliness

Now you wouldn't think all those words would fit together in a blog title, would you?
But this Texaco add is just perfect!  In the advertisement the Mother is explaining to Betty that the Texaco dealers have now promised to provide "clean fully-equipped rest rooms at our stations."

 

Those of you that follow The Vintage Hat Shop know that I love 1940s tilt hats.

My guy is a vintage car enthusiast and Texaco is one of his favorite collectables.

And when we travel I have this obsession with  finding clean restrooms.

So I think this 1939 Better Homes and Gardens advertisement  is a keeper!

Colette and 1940s fashions for The Short Girl

If you were a "short girl" in 1943 you might have gotten some fashion tips from Colette--- the "internationally known stylist, dress designer, and fashion authority."  Colette wrote a 48 page booklet describing and illustrating the "Dos and Dont's for the Short Girl".   Take a look at some of the recommendations for the stylish 1940s woman.

 Perhaps it is time to search The Vintage Hat Shop for some hats to match these fashions! More tomorrow.

Vintage Hats in the Movies!

Yesterday two favorite 1940s hats from The Vintage Hat Shop were purchased to be used in an upcoming movie! Wow!

A 1940s tilt toque hat by Carson Pirie.

Another 1940s forward tilt with backband.

The story -- The Jackie Robinson Story--"24".   is set in the 1940s, of course. You can be sure that my friends and  I will be looking forward to going to see this movie-- I'll be scanning the crowd looking for these hats!

The Poke Bonnet

Finding a 1940s  "poke bonnet" is quite a treasure these days as they are very rare. Any time I come across one I purchase it right away because I know my customers will be on the lookout for one in good condition. The hole in the back of the hat lets the hair poke out or peek out hence the name "poke bonnet" or "peek-a-boo" hat. The hat usually had some type of brim also.

I love the straw brim on this hat with the wide maroon bow. The floating netting just finishes it off.

The last three "pokes" that I purchased are all unique.  Look at the brim on each one! Wide, narrow, upturned.

I'll always be on the lookout for more unusual peek-a-boo, poke hats! Keep checking back in the shop for new additions.
