Vintage Wooden Hat Block

I was surprised to find this wooden hat block at a church sale last week! It had a man's Stetson beaver hat on it.
I am looking forward to listing it on Etsy but I am not quite sure of the wood. I have listed a balsa head before and of course I know it isn't balsa. And it doesn't have the grain or heaviness of oak.
What kind of wood do you think it is? Maple, maybe? Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

No, I did not paint the red lips. It came that way. And the white spatters appear to be some type of paint. There must be a story there somewhere!

Mailing a Hat With a Feather- Here's the Secret!

Recently I sold 2 hats that both had feathers. I wanted them to stay secure in the box and not move when jostled by USPS.

After weighing many options I came up with this solution:

I cut a piece of one inch thick left-over insulation the same size as the Priority box, covered it in tissue paper and fit it into the bottom of the box.

I carefully pinned the hats in place using hatpins. They were secure and arrived safely!  Whew. That shipping dilemma solved!
